Receptive Fingerspelling Practice
ages 16 to adult

Receptive Fingerspelling skills are among the hardest skills to master for new ASL learners.  Students often build bad habits of trying to see every letter rather than looking at the shape of the whole word.  This program delivers words at a normal conversational speed so that students can focus on the overall shape of a word.  For those who get "stuck", a speed-adjustable animated hand can spell the word.  The videos can also be repeated as often as desired.

Various activities and levels of difficulty allow students to learn at their own level and pace.  The scoring provides motivation to achieve accuracy.

There are about 500 words in the program, allowing for plenty of practice.  The words were chosen from high-frequency word lists, but excluded words that have common signs.  Thus most of the words in the program will be fingerspelled rather than signed in normal conversation.

There are over 760 videos since some words are represented more than once to give practice with reading fingerspelling from different persons.

Identify words from your chosen list. There are 15 lists to choose from, or you can see words presented randomly.

List Game Options and Hints

In the List Game, you can choose to pick the word from a list of ten words or, if preferred, you can type the word.

The "Type answer" option for the List Game will give you a hint if you make a mistake. The hint shows the letters that were correct and puts asterisks for any missing or incorrect letters. Here the correct answer is "nest".
